Winners of the Eastern Maine Soap Box Derby race, both stock and super
stock, will receive a large trophy to commemorate the moment. Racers
finishing 2nd through 8th place in each division will also receive tropies.
The winners in each division also receive a $1,000.00 savings bond, and
the rights to race in the All American Soap Box Derby World Championships
held in Akron, Ohio in July.
EMSBD provides the winners some financial
support for travel expenses. Drivers, upon their arrival in Akron, are
greeted by a police escort and parade before heading to the All American
Soap Box Derby Camp, Camp Christopher. Racers spend the week at camp with
drivers from all across the United States and several other countries and
participate in camp activities.
During the week, the racers also go to Topside. Topside is the top of
the Akron hill where all the cars are stored and worked on. Racers will
also get to fine-tune their cars and take a test run on Derby Downs, the
three-lane race track.
At the end of the week, the racers compete in the All American Soap Box
Derby World Championship Race. Drivers who place 1st-9th receive
scholarships and other prizes.
All participants in last year’s race received a commemorative jacket,
watch, collectable replica of the 1934 winning derby car, bag, and many
other nice gifts and prizes.
More importantly, drivers and families made memories that will last a
lifetime.
