Derby Tech

Maintenance of Wheels: wheel bearings- before they are stored for the winter, wheels need to be taken care of.  A few drops of a heavy oil (not WD-40) should be put into each bearing. The bearings should then be spun to spread the oil, and the wheels placed in a box or milk crate. Brake cleaner, or another similar cleaner such as carb choke or electric parts cleaner, will take all of the oil out of the bearing before it is time to race.  The brake cleaner will take care of any rust you may have in your wheel bearings.  This same process also works for the spindles of the car (the thing you put the wheel onto).  When it comes time to race it is OK to run the bearings dry (without lubricants, just the cleaner).  This does no damage to the wheels. You can also put some thin oil, such as WD-40 or molly lube, in the bearings.  Just remember that whatever you do to your wheels, your opponent also gets to race on them.  Most of the people that go to the rallies race their wheels dry.
