2006 Local Race Scheduled For Saturday June 3rd on Buck Street in Bangor Maine! Welcome to the Eastern Maine Soap Box Derby web site! We hope that you find everything that you are looking for and if you don't please feel free to contact us directly. Eastern Maine Soap Box Derby is the local organization affiliated with the All-American Soap Box Derby. We hold a race each year in the Bangor/Brewer area for children ages 8 to 17 who construct their own soap box derby racer from a kit in one of three racing divisions. The winners from this local race, being held on Saturday, June 3rd on Buck Street in Bangor (next to the Bangor auditorium), will represent our community in the All-American Soap Box Derby held each year in Akron, Ohio, now in its 69th year. Registration Kick-Off will be Saturday, January 28th from 9-1 at Bangor Parks on Main Street. Cars will be on hand to “try on” along with information packets and derby people to answer questions. Registrations will remain open until April 30 or until the field is full (space is limited). Register early for the “Early Bird” discount and to secure your slot. There are a limited number of entrants for each division so it is best to sign up early so you will be able to get a spot in this year’s race. For registration forms and information, call or visit Bangor Parks at 992-4490. In order to participate in the local derby race you will need to obtain a car for the division you would like to race in. You can purchase a kit from the All-American Soap Box Derby or find a used car locally from another family or drive a car that is owned by a sponsor. A new kit costs approximately $515.00 with wheels. You will also have to buy weights to get the car to its maximum weight. The Super Stock and Masters car can be painted if you desire or left unpainted. The cars can have sponsor or other decorative decals added to them, and your name and car number if you would like. It is required that the driver of the racer, to the best of their ability, constructs the car. If you use a car previously raced, the car will have to be disassembled, witnessed by an official that the car was taken apart (this can be accomplished by providing a picture of the driver with the car taken apart) and then rebuilt and updated to the 2006 car plans by the racer and an adult. It takes approximately 15 to 25 hours to construct a car and have it ready to race. Two weekends are normally required to put together a top-notch racer ready to compete in the local race, although with semi-experienced building skills it could be put together in one. The three divisions you can race in are: Stock: This division is made for the younger driver, smaller in size and aged 8 to 13 years old, depending on their size. This car has a maximum weight of 200 pounds and is suited for drivers up to 110 lbs. The shell of this car comes in white, red, or blue. It cannot be painted, however you can use decals and other means to decorate the car. This car must be built to plans without exception. Super Stock: This division is for the larger child ranging in weight up to 145 lbs and aged 10 to 17 years old. The opening of the car is a lot larger and this car can be painted if desired. Maximum weight is 230 lbs. This car must be built to plans without exception. Masters: This division is for the more experienced builder and driver. Minimum age is 10. It will require 80 or more hours to complete. You have the ability to plan and have some discretion in the building of the car. You can build this car around the driver, putting the controls, helmet, and weights to your needs. It is suitable for drivers up to 170 lbs., with the max car weight of 255 lbs.
